Monkeypox, the deadly and highly contagious disease which was earlier reported in Bayelsa State has now spread to neighbouring states.
About thirteen people with symptoms of the disease are already hospitalised in both Bayelsa and Rivers States. Now Akwa Ibom has diagnosed its first case.
The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information Charles Udo disclosed this in a statement issued from Uyo the state capital. He also noted that the Government is working on confirming two more suspected cases of the disease in the state.
The commissioner also reiterated that monkeypox has no cure at the moment.
“It looks like smallpox but the rashes are larger while the disease is milder” the commissioner said.
He however called on everyone to exercise caution, noting that the “Era of avoiding excessive handshake, regular handwashing and abstinence from bushmeat is here again. We will provide more information subsequently” he said.
