The Nigerian Customs Service Area II Command in Port Harcourt has seized three containers loaded with dozens of illegally-imported rice.
Abubakar Bashir who is the Area Commander of Customs in Rivers State disclosed this to reporters, while explaining that his command was resolute on clamping down on the nefarious activities of illegal importers.
He explained that his men embarked on a hundred percent physical examination of all the containers coming into the country, even as this has helped them to make about twenty three seizures of imports valued at millions of naira.
In his remarks:
“By insisting on 100 percent examination of cargo, we have also forestalled the importation of unwholesome and prohibited goods into the country.
Our stand on this issue is particularly reassuring in light of current events in the country which led to the seizure of illegally-imported arms. Today, no container exits the ports gates without hundred percent physical examination…”
The illegal importer of the bags of rice had tried to deceive the men of the Nigerian Customs Service in Port Harcourt by declaring the three containers as containing sewing machines. But upon closer inspection, this was revealed to be otherwise.
