The Sound City MVPs is undoubtedly Nigeria’s biggest music award show. Home-grown, it presents the opportunity to specially celebrate African musicians, albeit the Nigerian way. But there is more to it! If you have been consistent with the MVPs over the years, you’d have noticed that it is often characterised by unexpected turns and drama. This year’s event was no exception.
So first of all, all the stars arrived the venue and walked the red carpet, after which they were performances, presentations of awards and acceptance speeches. And in between all of these, all the awkward moments unfolded. There was Davido climbing the stage (with his entire village people, lol) just to accept his artist of the year award. And there was also Small Doctor jumping up and down the stage like a man who has lost his damn mind all in the name of “miming” his performance. But perhaps the biggest goof of the night was when Maleek Berry was announced as the winner for best pop MVP, and Simi’s Joromi video was played instead of Maleek’s video. He refused to come for his award while the awkward moment lasted, leaving the presenters standing there and wondering like ‘what the embarrassing hell?’
Music lovers have been wondering what exactly it was that caused that Simi/Maleek Berry situation. Was it just a mere technological glitch or did something a lot more serious play out before our eyes?
Well just to refresh your mind, both Simi and Maleek Berry were nominated for the same category at the 2018 MVPs; best pop MVP. And this is the kind of award show were music fans can actually vote for their preferred winners. All the voting were done apparently, and last night we were expecting to see who has won what. And so when Maleek’s name was announced as the winner, it became awkward that instead of for his nominated song to be played while he walk out to accept his award and offer his speech, that of his contender in the category was played instead.
Now trust Nigerian Twitter to point out how truly awkward that moment was! But all the jokes aside, I do not overlook the likelihood that the vote was tampered with. But for the sake of all that I’d right and transparent, here is hoping that it was just a costly mistake that should never have happened. The dj deserves some query please…
