Sunday the 12th of November 2017 might forever be remembered as the day when two of Nigeria’s greatest music exports proved to their fans (the world over) that they were indeed rivals. I am talking about none other than Davido and Wizkid. The two separately won big at MTV EMAs and AFRIMMA 2017, and by so doing reinforced the subtle enmity between them.
It should be recalled that shortly after Wizkid’s highly-publicised and sold out concert in London, he got nominated for the MTV EMA Best Act Category. What made this nomination very interesting was that Davido (his main rival in the business) had also been nominated for the same award.
Fans were quick to react over this on social media, with supporters of each of the artists arguing why their favorites were deserving of the award. Meanwhile, as if the controversy already created wasn’t enough, the two (Davido and Wizkid) were yet again nominated in the same category for yet another award show; The Best African Male Artist, AFRIMMA 2017.
Coincidentally, the two award shows took place on the same night; Sunday the 12th of November. And while Davido’s win at the MTV Europe Music Awards was first announced, Wizkid was later announced the winner of the AFRIMMA award. And while these separate wins highlighted the main fact that both artists were legendary in their own rights, it also gave fire to the already raging supremacy battle between them. This left some people wondering why they have to compete in the first place.
It is safe to assume that ego is mostly responsible for the rivalry between the two. As a matter of fact, ego is always mostly responsibible for most of the conflict in the entertainment industry. In the case of Davido and Wizkid, they both recognise that they are uniquely great in their own rights. Yet the basic human desire to exert one’s supremacy (which is inherent in them), keep them in constant dispute. They compete unnecessarily, a situation that is often worsened by the fans on social media who constantly long for celebrity gossip to keep their days interesting.
At the end of the day, the rivalry between Davido and Wizkid is completely unnecessary. They are both great. And for as long as they keep making good music, they will remain great.
Unfortunately, the truth is that the rivalry between those two will continue for a long time to come. Davido will keep mocking Wizkid for claiming to the only international Nigerian artist, while Wizkid will keep mocking Davido for having a “frog voice”. This is after all how it always is in the music business; there are always those two top artists who will fight for superiority sake.
